Activated Charcoal, Herbal Treatment, and Paleo Diet Template | Q & A

and we are live is thought the J here in the house it's Friday can you believe it it's like 9:30 ish and it's pitch-black and raining out I mean you would have no idea I feel like it's 10 o'clock at night here so we get a little rain and thunderstorm going and I look forward to getting some questions answered and in connecting with some peeps so how's everyone doing today I didn't give them to notice on today's chat so I'll kind of give you guys a few minutes to jump on board here and we'll begin so my coffee here I got a key with it mixed with a little bit of Madagascar vanilla and then my coffee so nice little little mix to get a little hint of vanilla in there today which is great gotta love that vanilla is my fave any questions feel free in chime in what do you guys want to talk about what do you all want to talk about I was at paleo effects last Friday we could go today was great we did a talk I did I did a talk on thyroid health it was good we talked about a lot of the kind of the underlying top four or five causes of why you may have a thyroid issue and a lot of people don't know that one of the biggest causes of a thyroid problem is gonna be autoimmune where your immune system is actually attacking your thyroid gland I'd say number two is adrenal and stress issues can easily cost thyroid problems and it does that because the more stressed you are your body is hardwired to take and convert your thyroid hormone into an active thyroid hormone called reverse t3 and that helps kind of hit the receptor site but it doesn't have that same metabolic activity so it's like putting a metabolic blank in your magazine cartridge and then of course stressing cortisol if it's too high or too low that's gonna affect thyroid activation thyroid conversion you we don't have enough cortisol we're not gonna be able to activate that hormone if we have too much cortisol we're gonna shut it down or thyroid hormone down to t3 and then of course gut issues poor diet all the inflammation stuff we need certain nutrients to run those enzymes to activate and convert thyroid hormone alright a couple questions here let's dig in Dylan writes in what do you think of binders activated charcoal bentonite clay zeolite for cleansing the gut do they help break down biofilms since they attract metals and toxins I like I like using activated charcoal I think that's great I take it typically my patients three hours after one hour before a meal that way they're not hitting any herbs and they're not hitting any of the food that way they're going in there and they're kind of cleaning up what's left over I like that I think um activated charcoal and bentonite clay are adds Orban's adds orbán's mean they attract the toxins like a magnet would attract iron filings so it's not quite like a sponge like a fiber it's kind of like a sponge it kind of soaks it up it absorbs with a be activated charcoal bentonite clay adsorb with the d kind of act like a magnet I like I think it's great I'm not sure about activated charcoal in killing biofilms but that's why in my program we always add in ginger tea Ginger's are very powerful biofilm buster so it's silver hope that helps there Dylan hey Matt I've realized that I'm classified as an HSP highly sensitive person have for a long person I have for a long time just wonder what your thoughts are I notice seemingly small things stress well I mean I think if you're more sensitive you really have to make sure that you have a good foundation in your diet and your lifestyle how you handle stress so sleeps got to be dialed in nutrition's got to be dialed in some type of stress reducing activity during the day whether it's meditation or prayer or movement just some kind of routine in there to keep the stress under control and I think it's good to have some kind of a biofeedback device going whether it's an EM wave or an or ring or some kind of HRV just to kind of give you some feedback that your nervous system is doing well and then I always like keeping something like you know magnesium or you know a liposome or gaba or some kind of a dapper gennaker by that way if you get stressed at all you can grab that a lot of people will tend to go grab the sugar or go to drugs or go to stimulants so if we can have constructive vehicles to deal with stress that's much better than the destructive vehicles that conventional medicine will offer or even just natural life offers with a lot of the sugar and the crap tim writes in what's the best protocol the help of food poisoning usually when you find out you usually don't sign up till you start puking feeling nauseous do you take black charcoal at that time great question I had food poisoning last week I had a green drink and I just had massive massive diarrhea now I solved it in like 30 minutes though at first I didn't know was a food poisoning thing I'm like okay maybe you know I had to a lot of MCT oil on my coffee maybe I just had a loose stool right and then after it happened again I'm like something's up took three or four activated charcoal I took my G X there five and four together which is oil of oregano a lot of berberine and I took probiotics with it at the same time probiotics probiotics help with the inflammation they can push out and kind of you know sequester out a lot of the food board illnesses like if it's an e coli issue it can kind of crowd that out it's also a nice anti-inflammatory the activated charcoal kind of soaks up a lot of the toxins it gives them both back to the stool as well in case something's irritating the gut and then the herbs and I did that and then within 30 minutes my stools were solid again no problem but it was bad for 30 minutes if I didn't have that who knows how long o to kept on going I could have kept on going for a couple of days I mean not good but as able to solve it activated charcoal and then in my line I could have probably been fine with just G X there v the mole safai doyle of oregano with the probiotics and with the activated charcoal that probably could have been enough but I added in the four which had the berberine x' in it which is the golden seal the Barbary grapefruit seed extract some olive leaf or olive leaf black walnut etc so that ended up working out great that's kind of my protocol that I would use for food poisoning and anytime I go to Mexico that's what I bring HCL or also digestive support of course but if I have a food issue probiotics activated charcoal GI clear for at GI Claire five all at the same time nonstop throughout the day I hope that helps there Tim are there bad bugs that I should try to take down with a will of oregano or olive leaf well know where to go mmm mmm they're bad bugs I should take down with oil of oregano or olive leaf aged girl like what would be your recommended yes so just the things I mentioned above right my gxr four and five four that would be great those are the herbs I mentioned sodium borate borax clean black mold poisoning regarding black mold if you have lac mold there's a product called corn chromium it's a pretty good mold kind of like i'm encapsulate the mold and kills it that's a pretty good product corn chromium NASA writes in want to know more about renal fatigue tiredness even with low carb diets again some people do really well on a lower carb kind of ketogenic Paleo template because they're coming from a blood sugar rollercoaster diet that is driving insulin resistance that's driving hyper secretions of insulin and it's causing them to be on this blood sugar roller coaster all day so some do really well moving in that direction and again if you move in that direction give it a few weeks because it can take a couple of weeks to a month for your metabolism to adapt to a good ketogenic diet so give that a little bit of time and then if you're hitting the wall with that you can always nudge up the carbs daily or weekly until you feel like you're in a better place can inflammation cause blood viscosity to increase how so definitely can via agglutination right inflammation causes cells to stick together right platelet aggregation causes all the cells to stick together right the more anti-inflammatory you are the more the cells are move and are slippery and they don't clot and decrease blood flow so yeah for sure man I got so many questions I can't even keep track of them here Yes No More writes in dr. J you recommend it carbs or starches mainly at night but if I work out at noon is it okay to have carbs or structures at lunch after workout too I would say yeah I would say you know my exception for carbs earlier in the day tends to be if it's post-workout so I would agree what causes excess vitamin D 1:44 we're not getting much sunlight or supplementing it is that a 25 hydroxy vitamin D be pretty hard to get 144 unless you're getting it in some other form that you're not aware of I would say it's probably getting in there some other way Oscar writes and I want to know if you know C 60 carbon 60 is a new product that is elaborated in olive oil seems to help mitochondria I think you mean a c6 carbon not C 60 carbon but maybe that's the product name so like a c6 carbon that's um that's a hexanoic acid that's like I think they Dave Asprey has one called brain octane it's similar to that so it's supposedly a ketone that's going to help the brain more so that's kind of the big benefit of that Charlie writes in wouldn't the charcoal wipe out the supplements if you take them at the same time I mean to a certain degree the only exception is if you're doing it for food poisoning purposes that's why I would do it right away because you really want to basically decrease the inflammation and decrease the veracity of the infection but typically like I mentioned earlier three hours after one hour before the only exception is if you're taking it because of alcohol purposes or a food purpose or an infection or a food poisoning purpose Ramona right then I discovered that lots of varicose veins in the back of my knees what do you recommend is it reversible typically bioflavonoids are really helpful like OPCs or grapefruit seed extract or resveratrol like a lot of those things are a really good horse chestnut for like vein health but outside of that just getting good movement getting good movement whether you have a rebounder or you're just lifting weights and moving and just keeping inflammation down all that's important if you have a whole body vibration plate that's great if not you know one of those rebounders that you can get at Walmart like a trampoline kind of things great just moving just moving is excellent and then just having good antioxidants and good inflammation and of course good collagen right those veins are made out of connective tissue so good collagen peptides are always gonna be helpful for vein health let's see here Noah writes in anyone is already dealing with some inflammation in the body due to the guts would you avoid using a TENS unit for injury no I mean I'm a big fan of bio electric devices to help with inflammation TENS is kind of more like an electric aspirin it blocks the pain and inflammation there are other things out there I have a couple devices called the ARP wave that are really good that work good Garrett's all peter has a device that's out in the market called the newbie and that's we're gonna have him on the podcast to talk more about that technology but that's a great technology dr. Jay ever since I started AF I've experienced ovarian cysts any suggestion how I can balance my so just curious how do you know that I have caused ovarian cysts because typically aya for intermittent fasting for short is gonna help with insulin sensitivity it's gonna help with insulin resistance essentially make you more sensitive to insulin and high amounts of insulin tend to drive ovarian cysts so did you get a ultrasound before did the if' and then retest and saw cysts or did you do the if' and then test it afterwards because I would guess they were probably already there to begin with it'd be pretty unlikely that I f woulda cause ovarian cysts but again I'm gonna need a lot more info to give you more specific feedback there what you recommended what's your recommendation on healing an infected cyst that has naturally burst you can do like a curcumin or a turmeric paste just Google online like turmeric paste you can put it over that the cyst and then put a bandaid on it and a lot of times it will just suck out all of the toxins and will help with the inflammation is it okay to do a magnet therapy alongside the herb champion for thisi Bo I don't have any problem with that no issues Nora Genesis writes in wood wild-caught salmon and or grass-fed butter be causing high vitamin D possible but I don't think there's enough in there to cause that I mean maybe a couple thousand in just that alone max I don't think enough to get your vitamin D at that level so here I think you wrote earlier about the vitamin D being really high something else is going on there and again the European levels are a little different so just be mindful like if you're in Canada or Europe it's like the metric is to point to lower so 140 in like Europe or Canada could be like equal to like maybe a 50 or 60 so in the u.s. in the 25 hydroxy vitamin D so could be that that you're looking at and just maybe confusing the reference ranges so keep that in the back of your head okay here Oscar writes in C 60 it's 60 carbon soccer ball not sure date rights and recommendations for a hundred percent P protein powder that's not high in metals or toxic metals yes my true P protein true P go to my site Justin Elcom /op true P protein we test that one for metals and it's non G pea protein that's a good one James right Sam happy Friday dr. J have you checked out the magic pill on Netflix all about the ketogenic diet I cut out almonds almond milk seemed to be causing histamine release itchy skin especially on my hands thank you I will check out the magic pill on Netflix thanks James appreciate it yeah that's the thing with keto right I am encountered a couple people at paleo effects where they're like well you know everyone needs to do better on the ketogenic diet everyone should do great and the problem is if you're not a practitioner you have your own experience and if the ketogenic diet like helped you get better then everyone needs the ketogenic diet that's the missing piece for everyone but some people it may not be the missing piece for they may have to adjust their macro or micro nutrients in a way that may not put them at a carbohydrate level that that's you know below 50 or below 30 that essentially keeps them in that ketogenic range so to speak so I'm all about customizing and one of the big pitfalls I'd say of the ketogenic diet is if you're relying on that extra fat from nuts or from dairy there could be sensitivities there and again Rob Wolfe talked about this in his book wire to eat is the immunogenic qualities of certain foods meaning if if you have your immune system is being stimulated by the nuts or by the dairy that can create a stress response and the stress response can increase blood sugar because cortisol is a glucocorticoid steroid and will increase blood sugar mobilization so you can actually jack up your blood sugar through a stress response of food and that's kind of a missing variable that I think a lot of people may miss out on because they're just looking at the carb content of the food and they're forgetting the immunogenic qualities of the food hope that helps let me keep on rolling here guys the questions are just coming in too fast um while doing a parasite cleanse is it okay to blend one banana with my daily green smoothie does the banana have too much sugar if you're doing the parasite cleanse it may be good because a little bit extra car which may help bait some of those critters out kind of like cheese on a mousetrap so I think that's okay as long as it's not causing too many issues like bloating and gas Tiffani right sing good one dr.

J thoughts on probiotic enemas a 12 strain with more bifid O's I find it has helped me and was wondering about your Sacro via backdoor a bad idea so you're talking about Saccharomyces via enema my thing is this I always want to take them orally it's just easier right it's not necessarily the big pain in the butt pun intended there but um I would just see I would just I try to always do things the easiest way possible for the highest level of compliance so I would try to all do it you know through the mouth orally to see what we can do there and I'd only go to an enema or a fecal transplant like worst case scenario I've seen people get really sick on fecal transplants now again you're talking more about a probiotic enema I would say if that's the absolute you know situation you have to go to and taking it orally it's not helping I don't have a ton of experience doing them from in the back door so to speak so I would always try to do them orally and see how you do first Oscar Wrightson do you use bioresonance machinery to treat patients I do not buy bioresonance do you mean something like a write machine it's RIBA the best stake for the highest fat in it I think we're buys great I mean that or like the bottom roast or the bottom cap I think is great but yeah rib eyes are my fav Mike writes in will your thyroid support supplements be enough for me to get off my thyroid may completely or do I need to be careful well it depends on what your pattern is again depending on what kind of thyroid pattern you have and then whether or not your adrenals are involved or whether or not your guts involve it's kind of a load of questioning this is a lot of areas I help people with their thyroid sometimes meaning I help them with their thyroid symptoms sometimes without even touching their thyroid because if we can fix their gut fixed objections fix their adrenals and then support the the nutrients sometimes the thyroid can come back online others have an autoimmunity where their thyroid gland is is just living on a prayer because it's been beaten up by the immune system for decades so everyone's a little different so I would say yes and no depending on what your pattern is and of course there's an assumption that you're making good diet and lifestyle choices too oh okay yeah I would have to see the lab genesis something doesn't make sense with that vitamin D being that high how often do you fast a week I may do like an eye - I always try to do at twelve by twelve you know which is like a 12-hour fast 12-hour eat period and then I'll do like an intermittent fast like one twice a week I try to always do like a bulletproof kind of coffee butter MCT I don't like not eating anything I like having that that good fat in that collagen in the morning some would say that's not a fast of this would say well it's still kind of a protein sparing fast so it depends on what your consider any suggestions for BP regulation normal in the a.m. but seems to increase at night hard to say I mean it could be just stressed from the day I would just look at getting into a good parasympathetic state maybe add some magnesium and see how it goes how much should I cook my greens to lower oxalates how much would a slight elevation and arabinose in organic acids raise oxalates again if your arabinose is elevated it tells me that's a yeast overgrowth so I would work on getting the yeast out cleaning out your gut and the number two I'd only worry about acts oxalates if you're really having a reaction to them whether it's a pain issue or a sensitivity issue I wouldn't try cutting them out you can just steam your food or saute your food that'll cut about 30 to 50 percent of the oxalates down so I wouldn't worry about ox lights unless you're having a kidney stone issue or you're really having muscle pain issue you're really sensitive to it and going low oxalate helps again steaming or sauteing your food won't be enough to like make a high oxalate through low but maybe make a high oxalate food medium and maybe you make a medium one low so just only go that wrote it only go that road if you really need to because it a lot of good foods that are high in ox lights like spinach do you eat awful not sure what that means Oscar rising I'm 9 to improve my microbiome do you think she legit and clays have soil probiotics oil probiotics seem to be the next step to improvement in the probiotic industry yeah I mean I like megaspore that's more of a spore based from a soil base there's prescript assist they change the formula recently but those are some good options to help improve your gut health you know once you know your guts clean and he writes in what's the best time to take probiotics depends I like in the morning or at night first thing on an empty stomach I think it's great there could be some benefit that they get with food so but morning and night I think is a great time you welcome nor I hope that helps and then can you give some advice for central sleep apnea Darren Schmidt says that AR the key what's your take what is a RN stand for Oscar let me know any difference between vs frozen veggies and fruits what is V S stand for vs frozen veggies and fruits let me know your meadow synergy is phenomenal even at one dose I feel an increase in energy any other mitochondrial support that you could recommend pqq or berberine yeah pqq is great thanks for your feedback James pqq was excellent I like that and then depending on what you need some people can even go for extra Co Q 10 or karna t and it just totally depends okay so fresh versus frozen veggies ideally if your fresh are gonna be within a day or two for sure the problem is a lot of people are eating their veggies like where they're getting them a day or two before they're about to wilt so to speak so I would go with frozen if you know you're not gonna eat them fast I think having some frozen ones I always have like a bag of frozen broccoli or kale or you know peas or carrots or something simple that's there because sometimes the veggies turn so if you can eat your veggies faster and they're not gonna wilt and you know they haven't been at the shelf you know for days already at the store that I think it's okay I'm sorry RNA ribonucleic acid it depends I mean RNA I mean that's a standard processed product that Darren is talking about I find that sleep apnea there's a couple ways you never won you can have your your mouth evaluated to make sure that there's not anything going on with the jaw with your tongue those kind of things again I would see that being a long-term issue you would notice that would would be a problem probably for a long period of time I find people have sleep apnea as they get older and that's because inflammation accumulates as they get older oxidative stress accumulates I find getting inflammation in the body improved makes a huge difference on sleep apnea the tongue the jaw is less inflamed the Airways are more dilated or opened body's more resilience I mean one thing that you can do is just do some mouth taping and then that way you're breathing through the nose I find it like if I'm sleeping on my back and I get a little too much saliva kind of congealing in my throat and I breathe through the mouth sometimes that can block the throat a tiny bit so you could always do some mouth taping to help with that that way it's forcing it through your nose and there won't be necessarily any blockage from any saliva hanging in the back of your mouth and then the air coming in do you eat liver organ meat often okay so that's the offal you mean I don't eat it too often but I mean if I do eat it I'm gonna get it from like a epic bar or I'm gonna get like if I go out I'll do like some liver some foie gras at a nice restaurant so that's kind of where I'll I'll typically get that either an epic bar or some foie gras a u.s. wellness meats has some really good liver too so that works pretty good he's putting ice on an injury not a good idea after because you want the inflammation and the blood flow in the area acutely for healing that's a great question that's a really really good question we definitely don't want heat we don't want to accelerate the inflammation but you know there's some I've read a couple of you know blog post on this where they talk about you know twenty minutes on three hours off is kind of the conventional thinking and of course any time there's a conventional thinking about something I always tend to want to go the opposite I'm okay with it acutely but I think if you have an injury like that you really want to make sure the soft tissue gets worked on and you want to make sure that you're you're giving a lot of good anti-inflammatory support because the problem is the inflammation response kind of gets out of control and then that can prevent healing from happening in the long run so you want to get the inflammation down later on but in the beginning the inflammation actually helps vasodilate so you can get a lot of immune response there but down the road you want to work on getting that better I would say I'm on the fence I would still probably ice but I would really work on getting the underlying soft tissue fixed and then work on treating the inflammation inside out not just topically with ice but with fish oil with curcumin with boswellia with um with up healing collagen peptides - was your green drink poisoning from a store or a bought fresh made from home it was from a store it was from the store and it was like a good brand - and I've had it in the last two days in a row and I had no problem so it may just been one isolated incident hard to say and then anyway to pick green powder drinks that will not bloat any ingredient stay away from depends if you're really sensitive to five Maps then you may have to be really careful and try to do lower fodmap green vegetables which may be really hard I would say get the SIBO fix get all that dialed in and you'll probably be good to go first can you take multiple types of magnesium at the same time like citrate which helps a constipation but also want to take alpha innate which crosses the blood-brain I have no problem with that I mean you can do some like natural calm for the bowels and you can do like some magnesium gel or a three and eight for brain or free relaxation I have no problem with that all right guys I gotta jump on a patient call here phenomenal chatting I'll be back on Monday again make sure you sign up for that thyroid reset summit Learn how to go Paleo on a Budget

hi everyone welcome thank you so much for joining us tonight for our google hangout i'm kelly from a girl worth saving and tonight I'm talking with Liz from paleo on a budget and we're going to be sharing some different tips and tricks for you for how to go paleo without busting your piggy bank just a very brief intro about me um I am the writer cook and photographer behind a pro we're saving which is a blog that shares paleo primal obviously gluten free grain-free kind of fall into that niche also recipes and cooking tips and Liz would you like to share a little bit about you hey guys I'm Liz from POA be my blog specializes in paleo on a budget also gluten-free primal um but yeah it's kind of my favorite part about being paleo the whole budget thing so where do you want to start okay so we kind of i posted if you look on the Google homepage just the kind of cliff notes for us where we're sharing what we are going to be talking about tonight um so first I think the big thing when you are going paleo is you should look at your priorities um you know take a look at is it really necessary to go to Starbucks twice a day or you know always you know you know just take a look look at your budget Liz you look like someone who goes your left when I said yoga Starbucks every day I've completely changed that about myself I used to be that person um I mean if I could I'd probably live there but since I've given up coffee it's been much easier to not go but yeah priorities learning how to work your budget to meet your needs a lot of people just use their monthly budget or they don't even know what their monthly budget is so figuring out what your priorities are is your priorities to go see every new movie or is your priority to eat healthy paleo meals every night and working your budget fit within that so ok so I think that's the first thing you really need to look do when you decide to go with any diet that focuses on a lot of real food past your needs which people say oh it's not expensive and yes it is yeah it is come on I mean when before I became a mom my husband and I would spend a thousand dollars a month on food so two people and that's like with supplements with pastured me with all of that so two people and so I can see why families that have you know four or four or five are like there's no way i can afford this diet so since i'm talking about pastor meats why don't we start there we will have a question and answer it towards the end of the f show and it looks like there's actually two questions already do you just want to go ahead and ants talk about those right now Liz or we can just start talking about pastured meats one of them has to do with pastor name let's start with a bastard me question okay so the first question is from Rachel and she's asking if we've ever done a cow share or any animal share with other families of saudi-owned a free extra freezer space um I do I have a big freezer I think it's a 13 point 6 cubic feet freezer um I had although in my other house I had a really small one that walmart has one seriously that's like maybe 30 inches wide and I was able to fit a half a pig in it talk about a dog impressive yeah I mean your I was able to it's like 30 inches wide by maybe like because it was for an apartment maybe like 42 inches tall and I have done a cow share um and it's a chunk of change up front but you do save money in the long run because you are buying in bulk and normally you will save money buying in bulk Rachel I would also try may be contacting like your natural food stores and my at my area new seasons has meat value packs and it's a bunch of different cuts of meat and it works out to about five dollars a pound and they have like to try tips in there and when I pull it out of the package its twenty dollars just for that piece of meat but for the whole pack package of I think it's like 20 pounds of meat or more it's like a hundred dollars oh that is a stellar deal I've never seen it i've never heard of a meat pack until you brought it up and I just now need to bring this up to my grocery store and be like where's my meat pack yeah seriously they're awesome i love that store they really really know that there are some people who follow paleo seriously I've actually never done a cow share or any kind of animal share because you can see my freezer behind me that's literally all I've ever had so we have absolutely no space for it but I do tend to buy my ground meats in bulk which isn't the same thing but it does save some money so if you can't fit your meat pack like a bull half a cow in your freezer you can always look for like kelly has the meat packs or just like larger packs of ground beef and everything like that to kind of help save yes so one of the things that we wanted to share too and was buying if you can't afford pastured meat don't feel guilty for not being able to afford pastured meat I think for me because I went from a double income to single income where we were spending a thousand dollars a month on our grocery bill to having to figure out how was I going to go to three hundred dollars a month you know I felt I honestly did feel guilty going to go conventional neat and I was like f you know there it has to be done and one of the ways that you can do that is just to buy the leanest cuts and then supplement with a high-quality high-quality coconut oil or butter or all that I know I always vote butter yes I love thunder I love me some butter um I know it was just a big grocery store today and I want like four packs of butter they always know Kenny like really that we're watching me like but I Street it if I sit on sale I will buy in bulk and they'll freeze it course I had like three packs of bacon in there too so they were just like I i always buy like applegate farm has those frozen sausages that you can microwave mm-hmm they're my husband's favorite like absolute favorite he'll eat them for breakfast sleep in for a snack he'll eat them before bet you name it he'll he'll eat them and their paleo son like hey awesome they're frozen and they're cheap and so I normally by like five or six boxes at once and they all look at me like do you really need that many that's like don't judge grocery messenger freezer space is for ya sausages and feet exactly I always stock up on butter when it is on sale always I will be the lady who buys 10 packs of butter and walks out of the store what brand of butter do you buy um we have it kind of depends um if I am buying from a food buying club that I'm part of then I will get a brand like mothers which is pastured and grass-fed um carry gold which I know everyone loves but at least where I live I seriously looked at it today and it was like not even the half pound I think it was like whatever the quarter pound it was four dollars I was like yeah no I'm not doing that um so I will buy either tillamook which is also grass-fed and rBST free want to think it's grass bed I bet that Tillamook Oregon and trust me there a lot of cals there so it's relevant they are all grazing on grass or I can't roam the other ground but usually I end up with mothers what about you I only buy carry gold because that's all we have around here but the foil pack you're talking about I get that for I think it's 299 hmm so it's not as badly priced at one grocery store the other grocery stores four dollars but and then I belong to bjs which is not a food money it's a warehouse kind of thing like a sam's club or a costco and they sell kerrygold for even cheaper and like the huge tub so mmm okay there to do that I still don't have a costco membership I don't have a costco near me but everybody has a costco membership and I'm so jealous because they're like look what I got at costco i'm like oh i know i heard they started selling almond flour i did they really that's what I heard I don't know I don't have a costco membership I do usually go with my friend whoever I'm just gonna mooch off of theirs I don't like you costco I'm gonna bring me can we go together this actually leads right into the next topic of ours which is shopping outside of the store which costco bjs they all are outside of your typical Shaw's or stop and shop or Albertson kind of grocery store mm-hmm I do you guys have a grocery outlet near you know when I lived in providence rhode island they had this thing called price right price right is hilarious it's kind of like a Costco but it's smaller and it's a regular grocery store so it was I was like the closest thing I ever came to that if you ever if anyone lives near a grocery outlet I would highly recommend just going and seeing what they have on their shelves because I find even if it's not necessarily a food deal um they have a lot of natural light so like they just have like goats milk soap they're just tons of it and you can get like three big bars of goat milk soap for three dollars can't beat the hut no you can't so even if you're not shopping for food but you know I would check out something like a crochet outlet like they had pomegranates um and I bought we were 99 cents that is the randomest thing to have on sale but awesome all at the same time like oh my gosh I handsome I'm fine three um so let's see someone asked um one or some of the Blessed best places to buy paleo items in bulk and question for me I would really check if you don't know about as your standard um if you don't know what I just said look in the cliff notes and you'll see the the name of it um but they are amazing to buy bulk if you're not part of a food buying club which is a lot more complicated than them um you can get really great prices on coconut on nuts on everything everything you can think of that you eat on this diet check is your standard you will have to call them and the way they work is you call them you ask if there's a drop anywhere in your house and the drop is where people have kind of pulled together and a big trout comes and drops all the stuff up because you have to have a minimum dollar amount for a drop and it's two hundred fifty dollars um and so they'll give you the name two people in your area just place your order put their drop in the order and then when you order comes you just go and pick it up but it's really inexpensive it's a great place to buy bulk stuff and then let's see I'm a Milan is great too as well as um what the heck was it called can you think of anything I kind of like stuck on the name of what I was just going to say feel like you would mention one the other day we have farmers markets I feel like there was one that started with an F that you would mention yeah but there are more places like as your standards out there so you could always also probably ask your co like your local co-op they might know of either food buying clubs or companies like that that are local for me i buy in bulk at the grocery store I don't go anywhere special I'm lazy um when something's on sale like we have this amazing called a pre frozen section at my local grocery store and it's like all the meat that was about to go bad but they froze it so it's still good and they sell it like half off so when they've got like gleam ground beef when I've got the pork in there Porkins of being under two dollars pound for a lean ground pork and I like this isn't a stern no no i don't i rarely buy grass-fed just because i can't afford it um but I just stock up hardcore there's like no stopping me I like literally will buy everything and that's another time I get a weird look at the grocery store but um amazon is also a great place like you would mention and then oddly enough target tropical traditions there you go it does not start with an ass crap yeah tropical traditions when they have a sale and free shipping they are probably the most inexpensive place you can buy coconut flour and coconut oil from they also sell eggs which is awesome somebody so data on eggs from them yeah at one point that's just kind of weird to mantis shrimp eggs I knew it wellness meets that's another place to buy in bulk oh yeah I never shot from them but a lot of people that i have purchased from them in the past and i had some other braunschweiger i think what was really good it's i'm not organ and sausage can't remember what it is but it was really good it's something it was yummy but i'm pretty sure his organs i'm so sorry i don't know i'm not one of those palios that do or that does organ meats I fully admit it that's okay though yeah that's okay so um target I know that you put target on there I did I target oddly enough we'll have grass fed beef they'll have really high quote like if you don't want to do organic local expert something like that they have like the high quality cage-free eggs there and those go on sale and then if you get their target debit card that's hooked up to your bank account you get think it's five percent off every purchase so from there if you can get like grass-fed beef on sale then you get an extra five or sun off and sometimes you get like money back gift cards so it's a good place to never ask eight they're gone thing the um I think so occasionally mine will but my targets grocery store is new so it's not as big um but anxious do you get I actually get the land o'lakes cage-free eggs yeah yeah I don't I can't afford the organic ones and these ones are the ones that I get are actually only fifty cents or so more than the regular grocery store eggs and their cage free and organic so I'm like whoo hoo I'll go with that they've like a nice nice colored yolk oh that's good yeah I I don't know I can't give up there's like two things like priorities for me is raw milk and we spend five dollars a half gallon that's what bad we do we go through a gallon a half a week oh and um and then pastured eggs we're finally getting chickens now which isn't necessarily more cost effective and buying them but they're adorable have you ever had chicken I've had chickens they are they are so awesome grew up on a farm so my aunts family has a oh really oh no did you freeze her to die freeze I don't know okay we're back though it was looking actually sorry yeah finished took a break it was a really quick like porno for gone um so I think we discussed shopping outside the store craigslist we didn't have never shopped with craigslist before ever I didn't even know you could do that oh my goodness people sell I was were actually getting chickens and i was looking at coops because i don't want to build one like I did the last one and um I did I built like an a-frame it's on my blog I got so check out this chicken coop it was I'm I'm that I'm the handy person in the house I'm gonna like build things huh I'm not I can't even put pre-made furniture together ah so um oh but then i was looking at chickens and someone was selling um bullets which are basically they're ready to lay you're not buying like a chick okay um and they were vaccinated which is a totally different topic but i never i didn't know people did that like I didn't go to vaccinate your chicken either I didn't know that but anyway that brings you back to craigslist which if you at least in portland you can find honey you can find beef shares you can find pork you can find eggs someone was selling pastured eggs for two dollars a dozen that is not bad at all I'm gonna have to check craigslist out today yeah so craigslist is a great place and so is your local feed store like sometimes on the bulletin board you will find just ads from different farmers who are like um I have some beef and that's we actually found some one who was selling beef per pound it didn't matter the cut it was five dollars a pound that is ridiculous and the ground beef was cheaper it was 250 a pound and that was just on the he was just someone who had to add on the UM at the local feed store and we went to his farm and we saw his cows and no it's a great that's another really good place to check if you're trying to afford pastured me you'll never know what you kit you can find my size you can find everything I'm Felicity's like you really can I don't know if there's anything you can't find on craigslist yeah I don't want to delve into that hole but that's for a whole nother hang out I felt that in craigslist and exposing shopping on craigslist Oh next is stock up what I'm most interested in talking about because I don't do any of this is couponing Liz but before we do let's go ahead and answer um Rachel's question about growing I love Rachel's question because this is me yeah she's me yeah I tell unless I don't kill tomatoes my dog's allergic to Tomatoes ah we grew them and she had this huge allergic reaction it was weird oh poor girl but we don't grow our own herbs well we did in the last apartment but I'm petrified of bees and so my husband had to water them and then he said no more once we moved um but I did kill them all um we actually don't I I have a I don't I can't even keep i'm surprised i kept them alive for as long as i did but we actually buy dried herbs I get when I bj's is my like we're munching like my costco and I have like organic herbs there magyar like not big and I got them for like 250 or three dollars each they're organic dried I know it's it's ridiculously good um and I just buy everything that way and then that way it takes forever to go bad you're not wasting money on the fresh the only time i buy fresh herbs is um my family's Greek on my dad's side so I make grape leaves all the time that is the only time i will splurge because my dad notices the difference so yeah unfortunately rachel were both terrible gardeners sorry Rachel well at least yeah so I i also just buy dry because if i buy pressure i will forget about them mm-hmm and then they will go bad and then i'm like i just spent all this money and um the only ones like you know no I by all dry let's ride in a garlic which is strength which is I love dried garlic because it seems like it's maybe it's because I know the measurement better than a garlic clove no car clubs are all different so what this for card clubs you can if like four large garlic cloves you have four small garlic cloves so because I do so much recipes stuff just saying a teaspoon you know that's everyone can get a teaspoon of garlic versus four paws of garlic being totally different from everyone on the exact same way I like garlic powder because I've found actually dried garlic but the garlic powder is easy mm-hmm that's I mean garlic powder yeah all right um I think you can get dried flakes of garlic to feel like I've seen that before maybe not though we'll see I'll to look right so coupons is that where we're headed yes for on coupons which I know nothing about cuz I got coupon ever see I never like a coupon queen or something seriously hi I didn't start couponing until jumper that show extreme couponer mm-hmm we just got on paleo the show had just started and I was like I'm gonna do that and I'm going to do it paleo and it's going to be fun alright so for couponing a lot of the stuff that I coupon is like my Terry Gould products my Applegate products carry gold has coupons sometimes online on their newsletter or if you sign up for their newsletter you can find carry gold coupons you have to dig but they're there um or like Lera bars because we're wedding photographers larabars are a huge thing that we just kind of keeping our back our camera bag with us when we get hungry so I like to keep on those because layer bar gives out coupons all the time um and you can actually get those at target the coupons part no layer bars themselves like balls yeah so you can get like if you played your cards right the layer bar box would go on sale then you could stack it with a coupon and use the five percent if you had their debit card so you can get boxes to you sort stacking oh I stack coupon splitting the coupon queen ling good I used to have a binder Wow I know but then people pegged me in the grocery store and I was like keep my head down um but I coupon a lot of my household items to you which is more important I think than keep wanting real food because when you coupon things like aluminum foil paper towels for that ends up saving you money in the long run to actually buy things like stirred me you know fresh fruits and vegetables stuff like that so you don't have to go frozen but if you can't afford fresh stuff too looking at couponing for frozen foods is really easy to UM like green giant or what are the other popular brands i buy store brand because they go on sale for under a dollar a bag for like frozen veggies yeah and you know like even be generic like if you're like okay I really want each and Eric going to the imaginary organic yeah if you go to the store brand for organic it's so much cheaper so much cheaper so much cheaper like because I think I was like just I was like I'm not making ketchup I'm buying ketchup you know and I was like in the organic section I picked up some i think it was Amy's or Annie's or something and then I walked past fees for some reason I was in the other comment I'll I was like holy smokes that's like half the price with this is the same thing sounds like yeah um I'm gonna get that I do that all the time I think that's one of the biggest secrets of being paleo though it's knowing to not stick in the organic section because I'm like the Bob red mills um flowers like the organ for some reason like half of them are they in the organic section and the other half and some of the grocery stores are in the regular flour section on it yeah and because it's in the organic section around here they can raise the price a little bit so when you kind of search outside the store or like the maple syrup i buy it's a local brand but it's not in the organic section the for the size i bought for the local company it was ten dollars and then the organic brand was 23 for a little bit bigger of a container I know it's ridiculous but because it's organic you can get a weight like some people think they can get away with it so making sure to go into like the regular section of the grocery store for simple things like maple syrup you know even the I had good luck I'm kind of we're kind of jumping around but I've had good luck after holidays I think there was like that name on facebook about the best day around isn't valentines day to day after Valentine's Day oh it's my favorite Valentine's Day name seventy-five percent off but that thing that applies to holidays if you'd like at least at my grocery store it seems like they get so many more nuts in around Christmas and stuff and if you go to the clearance bends they'll be organic nuts bag them there for like two dollars a bag you know and I just throw them in the freezer that's another great point because actually if you pay attention to when the end of this season is for something like what the end of this summer ask go for like those last batch barbecues will actually stock up on things like tri-tip sirloin steak and then after that people don't buy it anymore so all that extra goes on clearance and also checking like if it's the time of year for barbecuing people aren't going to necessarily be doing as many roasts so roasts are actually going to be cheaper at the grocery store so you can kind of wiggle pricing around and they'd remember that meat scare a few what was it last year year before where everybody thought red meat was horrible for you I thought that everybody still thought that oh there was like cool I know there was one point where everybody thought it was like there was some study or something and all the meat at my grocery store was like 75 percent off because nobody was buying it oh gosh I know it was amazing i had like a portly or something does that never happened in my stool i think it only hit the East Coast right on if you like kind of watch the trends to for what the news is reporting you might also be able to kind of ride that wave of what's gonna be on sale it's weird but it works that's a really good tip or like holidays like you said like onions carrots stuff like that that all goes on huge sale you can buy it and freeze it now it's time I'd butter I love butter I'm gonna have a hangout dedicated to butter I know today we're gonna be talking about butter butter um so couponing that was I'm gonna have to like look sign up for Kari girls newsletter I didn't realize they had coupons in Applegate Farm sign up for their newsletter costco Jake coupons I wonder yep they do they do Oh from what I know um ejs does we got a dollar off applegate farms so I got bacon actually the nice thing is like Costco might have their own store coupons you might be able to actually stack you have to check with them stack applegate farm coupon and then if Applegate has a coupon at the store you could stack those to get like two dollars off instead of the dollar Wow yeah i did my bjs the my costco has they always have their own section coupon so they frequently have carry gold and Applegate farm coupons in there which is nice cool and you you were sharing something earlier when we're talking about like um looking at how you shop by price oh oh yeah a lot of people don't look at you'll so in the grocery store you'll see the regular price we like 599 but next to it there's going to be another number that says the unit price and it's normally in yellow so that'll tell you what the better deal is like when I buy tea I have a hard time comparing like all right well this is 30 bags versus 20 what's the price per bag but if you just look at the unit price you'll be able to tell how much the differences per the unit which will help you break down if it's a good deal or not if something's on sale yeah that's my husband actually taught me that trick that's great though yeah and so like you when you coupon you also stuck up on non-food items don't yeah yeah yeah aluminum foil I love it when aluminum foil goes on sale during the holidays because it's like coupon and it's on sale and you can get 75 square feet for 250 rule do you like by the Sunday paper or something I used to but more and more now that my husband's fully paleo I'm finding that it's not as worth it for me so I do all the online coupons so cute good to know coupon come on okay oh no sorry coupon starcom is a great place to look and we're just talking Amanda just asked like where else can you find coupons um well right now in POV I'm actually trying to do well I'm not sorry I'm doing store matchups so we're posting now krogers sprouts whole foods and trader joes so if there's anything that has a coupon linked up with something on sale and posting it for you but otherwise just if you google like if you go to albertsons albertsons coupon matchups um it'll pull up a web like they'll be there's like five or six websites per store at least and they'll list everything that's on sale with a matching coupon if there's a coupon for so that's a great way to just find the online coupon and do it easily I didn't even know what matchups meant what cuz i had that word and i was like what the heck is that i don't know exact and some stores double coupons up to it like 99 cents so if you really play your cards right you can get stuff for dirt cheap wow I no wait there's like I can't remember I actually have a couple posts on my site with links to different coupons but I vote oh I was sorry i was reading hopes question that's a vanity thinkin hopefully that answered your question Amanda if not askin um so she's saying costco doesn't take coupons oh I'm sorry I thought they did that's my bad maybe they did at one point but they definitely do take their own coupons ah so there's like v2 bombs in the store yeah I just like bjs I think they've like a rack or something and then I think they mail you I know my store it males us like a booklet but that's so sad that they don't take manufacturer coupons to I didn't know that you know what i was looking at I don't know if anyone uses ziplist um where you can like you know save people's recipes i have like them on my website it's called the recipe box but i was looking through there and they actually have some coupons in there weirdos which I didn't know first I didn't know Trader Joe's had coupons and then I was like oh ziplist has see I told you I don't know anything about coupons um ziplist has links to different coupons in there oh I would check if you are a member of them are on you go my website and look in the recipe box I'm pretty sure they have I know they have trader joes coupons I actually just signed up with zipless to I like them I like being able to save everybody's you know like your recipes and somebody else's recipes and have it all in one nice little neat spot that's fun witcha yeah so what else videos up any other questions I think that's pretty much it I mean we did if you guys again look at the the PDF that we downloaded or uploaded on the page there are some links to just a couple helpful posts on our site that share some tips on other tips on how to not let your budget on this diet um goodbye and clubs I actually have a post about it because it's a pretty complicated system but you can save a ton of money if you are part of one it's essentially a co-op but it's member it's not like there's no sore front it's usually it sounds house um and everyone orders from like frontier which you can get a ton like Felucia I can't give prices you're not allowed to get prices when you are part of a food bank club because it's below like retail you're not supposed to share um but like organic food so cheap viewed another thing sorry I'm totally distracted but you can contact good one talk about food bank loves it it's just kind of like this huge there's so many different parts to it I mean because people can sign up with wholesale grocers and so you can get organic produce for so much cheaper and sometimes you don't have to be you don't have to get like a lot of times you need a business license but sometimes you don't have to do that and you can just find big bold things of apples and split it with people you know because if you go to the store and you buy organic apples really can't at least hear you're looking at 99 pounds and it's like confettis ridiculously expensive for organic apples really I don't know I don't I mean I never buy apples or because I live in New Hampshire just drawing apple season I just end up stocking up on Apple's cuz you got to like that Keith yeah I mean it's just like they they don't keep it very long but I make a ton of applesauce a nice photo I do love applesauce but I eat so many apples during apple season I don't want them the rest of the year well that's good that's the only thing seasonal eating that's also how to save money yes exactly seasonal eating and growing your own you know your own food is a great way to do it your have a green earth um then that the both of us combined I don't know I can grow tomatoes and herbs I just they do not last in my house unfortunately so I do it drive it but I think that's it that was fun that was fun so thanks everyone for joining us tonight and hope that we shared some tips that might help you save money on your budget and have a good one .

Eat Drink Paleo with Irena Macri

hello my name is Sam feltham and welcome to expert in to use here on smash the fat with me today is paleo food blogger and cookbook author of Eat Drink paleo irina mak ray how you doing Irina I'm going hi Sam thanks for having me not a problem not a problem at so I'm now as I just kind of mentioned there you are the author and blogger of eat drink paleo I'm like which one I think the printed rod right there I so good it's coming to you but you probably haven't got it yet so I'm not quite yet not quite a bit so good and as you can see here I've got the kindle version and well the PDF version and it's a beautiful book as you kind of sort show it showing there oh absolutely beautifully put together and you're also as a paleo food blogger at eat drink paleo calm ayee where people can kind of check out all of your info right there but before we kind of get into all of that first I wanted to find out how exactly did you kind of get into this paleo world and start kind of blogging about cooking food and things like that yeah sure um well I guess I started out the best way to tell the story is I mean I've always been interested in food and cooking that's something that's been a passion of mine since I was a sort of little girl so I've always known that at some point in my life I will I will do cooking as a job or as a career I mean it took me about 30 years to get there but but I did eventually and so I used to work in a digital media space sort of in media and corporate for quite a few years and you know how did the typical career climbing you know from one world to another and getting pretty sort of running the rat race and sort of fitness and wellbeing is there's always been a passion of mine and a hobby you know I've always been interested in that and a few years ago I got interested in the 4-hour body a book by Tim Ferriss which is not paleo primal but it's it's about sort of low carb aging and I mean it just made me a asked questions about my health and well-being and how I eat differently and so that was my first introduction to the low carb way of eating I suppose and at the same time friends of mine were experimenting with paleo and on the background of all that story is my mom got sick and she was you know fairly healthy laid in she's an herb sort of like fifties and she had two cancer's back-to-back and you know had a bit of a wake-up call of you know what what can I do now to forget to bulletproof my health and well-being so that I I can prevent what lease prolong my my health into the future and you know luckily she's in remission now but it has made me question my own choices and Kayla came into my life right at the same time and you know I am very curious by nature so I read lots of blogs and books about it and a lot of it made sense to me because it was just it's just a natural way of eating and I was just like bingo wow why haven't we thought of this before and and so yeah the more research the more read about it I've kind of tailored the framework to suit my own lifestyle and my blog became a documentation of my own journey as a cool and also as a paleo enthusiast and an advocate and I guess I started it because I wanted to show people that paleo is not meeting sorry bitch you know it's not what people have this kind of preconceived me an idea of what matter is it's not just me and you know I basically photographed what I ate and I just wanted to show people actually it's just about eating really good food made with fresh produce with herbs and spices lots of flavor you know not being afraid of using different ingredients new ingredients um and that's how it started out yeah absolutely and as I said before you kind of put together this beautiful and creative culinary cookbook because as you kind of mentioned there it's not just about kind of meat in three veg and things like that I'm you can get really kind of creative and experimental with real food and the kid of um you know relates to a paleo kind of lifestyle now for those that haven't heard of paleo or even prime or anything like that what exactly does this mean okay so KO refers to a way of eating and leaving I suppose that is inspired by our ancestors or hunter-gatherer ancestors it's not a way of mimicking I just wanna make that really clear it's not about me making our ancestors you're not hunting for for animals we're not fishing and we're not foraging in the forest although that's part of the lifestyle and it's very highly encouraged that you try and you know go get your own food but it's basically looking at what our ancestors did right you know because they're a lot of the current diseases that we were experiencing from cardiovascular and obesity and diabetes Alzheimer's they're all modern diseases that didn't exist even 10,000 years ago you know so so how it did we leave for millions of years without them and and what what contributed to us developing these new diseases and so well of our ancestors to see what they ate and how they lived how they behaved about how they slit and we then apply the chiro research and and studies and sort of combined that into a framework or set of principles that is called paleo and as far as the diet is concerned it's going back to the way we used to eat and the way our immigrant grandparents used to eat maybe not the hunter-gatherers and so things like excluding the you know processed industrial oils for example so the canola the soybean vegetable corn oils and all the foods that they contain because there are so many things it's amazing and it's you know and refined grains too much sugar and carbohydrates it's going to going back to natural way of eating which is protein so animal fish and seafood lots of vegetables and some fruit and berries some nuts and seeds lots of healthy fats from from animal fats as well as you know olive oil avocado oil coconut oil things that are less processed you know the cold-pressed so it's basically an just excluding processed food that's probably the easiest way of saying it if it comes in a packet and has been refined and processed that's certainly something that our grandparents wouldn't recognize and so it's not necessarily good for us and so paleo basically is that framework and it's it's something that people can then adapt themselves and your question was before yours mentioned primal for example and primal is sort of a deviation of failure which which was just coined a different name for the same thing it's like same same but different right mm-hmm so some people in primal which is a little bit more flexible and allows them to have a little bit more of dairy and those sort of the healthy kind of dairy now whether it's raw dairy full fat and sweetened fermented some more natural sweeteners you know a little bit of rice that sort of thing but essentially it's just it's just a way of eating Whole Foods real foods that came from the ground from the sea from the trees from the air absolutely yeah I've seen that that's kind of like the consistent message kind of through the Paleo primal communities that it's about kinda real food and as he kind of eloquently said there it's not necessarily about mimicking and it's a well it certainly isn't about mimicking and what our ancestors did cuz you know they didn't necessarily have broccoli or anything like that no no no but the whole point is is that it's kind of a real food approach which is what they would have had to have done and back in back in the Paleolithic era and so with that in mind kind of like the background about what paleo and primal is and what and what does the diet kind of include and what doesn't it include kind of specifically okay specifically so and when we're talking about paleo sort of one hundred percent clean polio it's no grains and by grains we mean wheat rye barley millage corn lentils are no lentils and no grains and though beans they're lentils legumes of any sort of type of form I do you want me to talk about why they excluded yeah yeah sure let's go into it though so grains and legumes I mean one of the things that we're trying to avoid is is to cut down the level of carbohydrates we consume we're not we're not trying to cut out carbohydrates because we do need it's just that we eat a lot more that we can actually we actually need and so carbohydrates then turn into into that truck with red so we're just not we're not using it and it's it's a very inflammatory way of eating so all too much sugar and specifically refined sugar not the natural kind from honey or maple but refined sugar refined carbohydrates omega-6 a high Magus x files which are soybean canola corn vegetable rapeseed sorry grapeseed oils lots of the seed oils which sort of known as healthy oils actually if consumed in higher amounts and very inflammatory because they have high amounts of omega-6 pro-inflammatory fatty acids at the same time we don't need enough fish to counteract that so so peleas about excluding foods that are supposed inflammatory really in the kind of essence since the grains and legumes because they are really high in carbohydrates and also they had contained anti-nutrients which some of them are lectins which can irritate our digestive lining making I guess causing malabsorption leaky gut you know poor gut flora and things like that and the other one is a fitting acid or phytates and that can bind to minerals in our body and again prevent their absorption so um they're the main reasons to exclude those and mainly because we didn't really used to eat these foods you know many would argue that we need grains and legumes because you know they contain nutrients that are essential but but actually you can get all of the essential nutrients from from meat and find based diet so so grains and legumes are the two things then the processed oils which I just mentioned and sugar dairy is excluded as well mainly because gary with any mammals that drink milk from another mammal essentially I think genetically some cultures are better suited to dairy than others are my cranium you know I'm from the sort of Central Europe where cattle has been cultivated for a long time we've been you know we've had dairy around for very long time so i can probably digest it better than say Asian cultures or maybe some of the South American cultures you know if you go down to some of the African tribes they've they eat drink a lot of milk so so so dairy is one of those sort of gray areas where in the clean pelo it's excluded mainly because um it is a little bit inflammatory and it can cause some issues for people so they're the main things dairy grains legumes process it in oils sugars things that are included and advocated are lots of protein and again from really good sources so we're talking about our meat from grass-fed cattle free-range eggs and poultry pork sustainable fish and seafood wild if possible vegetables lots of vegetables are lots of starchy and non-starchy vegetables so you can be more low carb paleo or more high cut failure in which case you'll eat more bananas more tubers such as sweet potatoes in your parsnips lyrics beechwood current etc and so lots of veggies i would say probably seventy percent of the paleo diet is vegetables unlike the popular belief mmm and it's kind of like a side of meat basically and then you know some fruit militant season berries some nuts and seeds here and there and lots of healthy fats you know we're going back to eating butter again how fantastic is that you know cooking in duck I mean that's the taste amazing avocados coconut oil coconut milk coconut cream you know I no longer go to the restrooms and get off Harry's and so much fat in that you know now I just embrace it now so all those things included and you know things like alcohol and coffee and little treats and chocolates i mean that's that's kind of a that's a personal choice i think and you know we'll need to live a little bit so you know it's fine if you have a little bit of red wine or you know black coffee if you like that and some people prefer not to have that at all because they feel better but um i think that's that's a personal framework i suppose yeah it's very much kind of personal choice and in your book there as well you kind of go on about your 8020 philosophy to this approach is kind of to some people that might sound really restrictive and things like that stay kind of tell us about your 8020 philosophy and your your philosophy about putting this this paleo framework into a modern world yeah the easiest way to think about it is um I always say to people that if you try to be too strict and too dogmatic about being paleo and it's not very sustainable long-term you know at some point in time you will fall off the wagon and then you will make ourselves feel so guilty and stressed about it that you're going to cause more negative effects on your health and then by eating well so for me you know the twenty percent is that eighty percent of the time I eat pretty clean paleo you know and I cook at home a lot so I find that when I'm at home I will eat paleo way of eating because I can control what's in my pantry what's in my fridge and what goes into my food when I go out that's when I make certain exemptions and you know often when I travel or when I'm going out with friends I will allow myself to have white rice so sushi is a great option for when you're trying to set up eat in the road you know i will have things like pina maybe corn chips and salsa if i'm going to mexican restaurant and i will have a little bit a little bit of gluten-free desserts so maybe creme brulee renowned then you know and certainly no enjoy glass of wine with my with my dinner and I love trying new things so for me it's more of a you know if that twenty percent is is things that I know that in in small amounts are not going to affect my health very much and I have to put a cab it there because i'm not you know seriously allergic to things like gluten for example or casein in milk for some people they have to avoid those at all course all the time and so you know that's a different situation but for me that twenty percent can include things like an occasional slice of sourdough which is you know once in a while which i think is is fine because for me as a cool i need to try those things so that i can then somehow recreate them in the you know in the in a way that's paleo-friendly my with two different types of flowers so i'd say it's for research as much as for pleasure that's a good way to look at it good what about the twenty percent so think everybody has to make their own choice you know some people can't afford to eat grass-fed meat all the time so you know it's fine just go for the best next choice that you can get it's the same with vegetables and fruits you know some people can't afford organic fruit and vegetables and so you know they can use the Dirty Dozen where there are certain fruit and vegetables that are that are worse off than others and then make sure that you wash them within a little bit of apple cider vinegar and water so um I think that that twenty percent is something that it's a personal paleo code as priests press important it's something you have to define and the best way to do it is to do maybe like a 30-day paleo challenge or 30-day paleo plan where you that I've tried to be more or less one hundred percent clean paleo and then you may introduce certain foods back and and you see how you feel you know because you might you know I handle dairy really well as i said before so we've got butter in the fridge i often have you know just plain Greek yogurt alaska fee and things like that so i include a lot of probiotic foods and so in that respect you know cheese and things like that is something that i can have with problems but for other people it is a problem so I can understand why they can I have to go everything or nothing so mm-hmm absolutely and and that's kind of what it comes down to again the paleo kind of lifestyle is in an individual quest and as kind as he said there Chris crecer kind of goes on about your personal paleo code is that you kind of start off with this base foundation and that helps you kind of discover what works best for your health and that's kind of the major thing with paleo it's not really just about fat loss or anything like that it's about health and having the healthiest body possible absolutely yeah I think and and the other thing that I always said to people to me palu is all about keeping the inflammation down and I i always keep reiterating it because people often associate paleo with weight loss or you know trying to get must therefore CrossFit or you know some other reasons but to me you know I've seen I've seen people heal with paleo diet I've seen them sort of you know reversal of the conditions that they have chronic conditions for me personally I know that when I eat more or less paler you know most of the time my boy inflammations low because I don't get as many colds and flus or any other sort of regular things that I would normally get and they've just become almost you know extinct for me so I know as soon as I get a flu or cold I know that my immune system has been compromised and it's because I've been eating in stress ignore I haven't slept enough and it's amazing that since I've gone pehli I've become so in tune with my own body and I think from people that I've spoken to they experience the same kind of transition is that you really start to feel and kind of understand how your body feels absolutely absolutely that's kind of one of the biggest things is starting to be able to listen to your body because the fake foods that are out there the sugar refined carbohydrates in the and the highly processed oils and kind of almost make your body and hard of hearing that's yeah it kind of switches off your senses I stand when you start taking a real food approach it kind of opens up your eyes and ears I'm in a metaphorical sense in terms of your body senses and you start to kind of feel where your body should be going at that moment in your life and and and that's kind of yeah one of the good things i think the Paleo community kind of give and to the health and fitness industry and now again people might kind of sort of feel that it it's really restrictive and things like that but as you can sort of see here and you've got some really beautiful kind of photos of food yeah of meals and things like that it's kind of absolutely wonderful like to see these these nails they beautifully photographed but then they're also kind of really wholesome and wholesome and nutritious meals so kind of what does your day and daily diet kind of look like yourself okay I'll well I'll tell you what I had this morning that might be they might be the easier so yeah this will probably be representative of most mornings but we usually have I'll have to pan fried eggs and I usually pan fry them in coconut oil or butter or ghee and we'll have a side of avocado and I like to ferment my own pickles sort of sour crab or by kimchi from Asian supermarkets and so i'll have a side of kimchi or sad crowd um you can have some bacon in the house again I know paleo people go crazy over bacon and I and I love bacon but we don't have it every morning again that's another myth so we'll have some bacon if I heaven but otherwise I often do this really good cool t-shirts called sweet potato rosti and your grade sweet potato and you pan-fried in butter or ghee for about ten minutes five minutes on each side and I season it with you know garlic and onion powder and salt and pepper and some green onions and it's delicious and sort of gets caramelized on both sides and it's it's a little bit of a you know a good source of carbohydrate in the morning for people if you're quite actually may use a little brain power during the day so oh and it's yeah its eggs and sweet potato and avocado smoked salmon sometimes it's just leftovers from the night before which is also fine I think people then breakfast needs to be you know toast and cereal and it's often sweet but it's actually a breakfast can be dinner or vice versa um and for lunch I usually usually have a salad but I like to be a rage and my salads are quite again quite creative and do a big rainbow salad like to see lots of colors from different vegetables I get lots of fiber and i will have either salmon or sardines i love having settings for their mangastream today i had prawns and fried and garlic the garlic chili and onion um and you know make my dressing and usually salad as my lunch that's quick and for dinner tonight we're having and making a bolognese ragu sauce with some porcini mushrooms and I'm making sweet potato noodles with the sort of spiralizer and we're going to bake them in the oven quickly and some zucchini levels as well but that's going to be our spaghetti bolognaise month buster um that's probably quite a representative sort of day I think I try to include you know three four times a week I try to include fish as much as I can whether it's lunch or dinner and I very protein as much as possible so it's not just me or just chicken and and the same is fruit and vegetables I try to get what's in season because then we'd sort of get her a variation of stuff and yeah I'm quite lucky i have a greengrocer right next door to me and I just pop over and get what I running for the meal and and and make that on the day oh goodness girl get his gold um and that's kind of another thing about the paleo lifestyle is it's about that variation and seasonal variation trying to yeah get vegetables and fruits in season so then they're they're most nutritious Oh amazing yeah yeah absolutely in candy ideally from his local farms as possible as well yeah and that's that's actually another cool thing about paleo is again it's pelo is one of those things I have a dilemma with the name every now and then because you know it really shouldn't even be called pallu it should just be a normal way of eating and living you know and we used to eat and live that way now when I was little we used to go to the markets and and yet fruit and fruit and vegetables and meat that was brought from the farmers that morning and we used to grow a lot of our own stuff so to me that was quite normal you know now like years later I'm in Australia and I'm eating a lot of commercially produced food then the eating decision alee and organically locally becomes this novelty but we kind of we used to eat that way all the time and so in a way of palos is is is a movement that is reintroducing it back and which is fantastic and I often say to people who think that Bailey is not sustainable because we eat so much meat or you know they think it's anti vegetarianism almost but in a way you know we advocated me that is sourced from grass-fed cattle cattle that's been raised humanely and it's been treated really well that's had a very healthy and happy life and same with pork and eggs it's all free range and and pasture fed wild sustainable fish and ce4 as much as possible so I think in a way Paley is actually very eco-friendly way of eating of that makes sense it's kind of nice ethos behind a nice philosophy um then I think often gets misrepresented and confused but but but yeah it is it is a really nice way of getting your life back into that you know the way we used to eat absolutely absolutely I'm fantastic well thank you so much for your time today I've arena were there any kind of last wise words that you'd like to part with out with our listeners and viewers oh I think don't be alienated by the name paleo because if you've always wondered what it is and you've read in the art in the media that paleo this and that you know don't take anything for granted i think try it for yourself try and see how you feel because it's all about your own body nobody else is like you and see how it makes you feel how it changes the way you leave and then as I said you know create your own tour 8020 rule if you want to if you want to keep it 100% that's totally fine but you know adapted to your own lifestyle if you're busy if you have kids if you have a family to feed if you travel try and make it work for yourselves and and it's all about making just small steps you know better you know it doesn't have to be a huge leap transition you can just sort of take it a little bit at a time you're not exclude just try cooking with butter and game coconut oil to start with you know digital processed oils and then maybe exclude the wheat and then maybe eggs with the sugar and slowly slowly sort of get your body back in tune with itself um and yeah don't be afraid about what other people say anything it is your body it doesn't matter what other people say if you think you're crazy there are hundreds of thousands of us if not millions of us eating that by now so um just give it a go and you know there are so many great resources my book is and my websites like one of hundreds and add there and it's really fantastic that it's growing it's becoming more mainstream and yeah it's becoming more accessible and approachable I suppose so definitely give it a go see we think you know and you don't even have to call caeliar than of the day just eat real food yeah absolutely absolutely and people can check out your book by going to smash the fat com ford / eat drink pee that will forward you yes straight until there you go yeah absolutely I'm it's a beautiful book and people can kind of check it out on your website there they can either get an electronic or fully printed version as well and then I believe there's and there's a there's a program that you're kind of running as well yeah so um on the back of my website which is entering paleo website I've partnered up with the nutritional medicine practitioner back in Australia Claire yet and you know she brings in a lot of nutritional wisdom and then you know degree in science and I bring my cooking kind of you know tryouts so too other we put together like a 28-day program um it's not necessarily paler it's more just clean eating and toxic free living it's called rejuvenate program and we've got a website that we we're running together on the back of that called rejuvenated for live com and it's a website where we move away a little bit from paleo and just cooking and will focus more on just sort of healthy leaving and and well-being and we'll talk a lot about the foods and ingredients specifically what nutritional value that have how to make your environment more sort of toxic toxin free and so it's not it's not just cooking because cooking is something I love but I'm also chicester than the other stuff and and so clay and i wanted to try and introduce that lifestyle to the mainstream maybe two people who are not necessarily interested in Taylors specifically but it's just our way of spreading a message via on the Paleo community so yeah check it out it's rejuvenated falar com and it's got lots of fantastic interesting in-depth articles and recipes as well fantastic fantastic highly recommend everyone to go check that out um and yeah is there any way that people can kind of get in contact with you by Twitter or Facebook currents oh yeah I'm a social media hora yeah absolutely no I've got so I've got a facebook page obviously for entering pelo it's just if you search for a drink later you'll find it on twitter i am at Irena mercury and on instagram i'm a drink pelo I've got a Pinterest account as well so I'm kind of you know him I'm floating around between social media platforms all time we can shoot me an email just Irina and a drink telecom that are you and I'll George matter answers as soon as I can yeah absolutely absolutely I was he said we're all kind of like digital nomads these days I'm sorry very very busy folks but yeah highly recommend again we're going to check out eat drink paleo bio Rena at smashed fat calm for / eat drink paleo um and yeah I really thank you again so much for your time today and there we hope to see you soon absolutely and I'm really looking forward to see where I guess the Paleo community goes in the UK and just around the world and so having these kind of interviews is great because we just get to introduce some new concepts of people so I really appreciate you having me no worries are in my pleasure my pleasure all right take care .
